Every 1st of January, as Nigerians usher in a new year with hope and optimism, the town of Jengre in Plateau State comes alive with colour, culture and creativity. At the centre of this celebration is the Jengre Luxury Hotel, under the management of Mrs Hannah Harry, which has now successfully hosted the second edition of its annual beauty pageant.

What began as a hospitality initiative has grown into a powerful platform for youth empowerment, cultural promotion and socio-economic development in the Jengre community.

The choice of January 1st for the pageant is symbolic. It represents renewal, opportunity and fresh
“We deliberately chose the first day of the year because it stands for hope and new possibilities,” Mrs Hannah Harry said. “We want young people, especially our girls, to start the year knowing that their dreams are valid and achievable.”

By making the beauty pageant an annual New Year tradition, Jengre Luxury Hotel has positioned itself not just as a business centre, but as a cultural and social institution in the area.

One of the strongest impacts of the pageant is its contribution to the local economy. Each year, the event attracts contestants, families, judges, guests and tourists.

“During the pageant period, you see hotels filled, shops busy and people smiling because business is good,” Mrs Harry noted. “Our goal is not only to host an event, but to create opportunities for our people.”

Local traders, tailors, caterers, hair stylists and vendors benefit directly. For many small business owners in Jengre, the pageant period means higher income and greater visibility.

Modern beauty pageants go beyond physical appearance. They emphasize intelligence, confidence, leadership and community service.

“Beauty is not just about looks; it is about character, courage and contribution,” Mrs Harry said. “We train our contestants to speak well, think boldly and serve their communities.”

For young women in Jengre and its environs, the pageant provides a platform to express themselves, build self-esteem and gain exposure.

The pageant also showcases the rich cultural heritage of Jengre through traditional attire, music and values.

“We are proud of who we are,” Mrs Harry added. “This platform allows us to celebrate our culture and show the world the beauty of Jengre beyond stereotypes.”

With consistency and quality organization, the Jengre Luxury Hotel beauty pageant is gradually becoming a tourism brand for Plateau State.

“My vision is to make Jengre a destination people look forward to every January,” Mrs Harry said. “If we can do that, then we have done something meaningful for our community.”

The annual beauty pageant at Jengre Luxury Hotel is more than a crown and a cash. It is a tool for development — empowering young women, boosting the local economy, promoting culture and strengthening community bonds.

As the tradition continues, the event stands as proof that when hospitality meets vision, communities grow, talent shines and hope multiplies.
