The people of Odo Ape Community in Kabba-Bunu local government of Kogi state have expressed concerns about attempts to downplay the severity of security situation in the community.

They specifically expressed worry over the recent press statement attributed to the Chairman of Kabba-Bunu LGA, Barr. Zacchaeus Dare.

President, Odo Ape Development Association, Ologbonyo Kehinde Jethro, in a statement on Sunday said the chairman’s statement suggests that the peaceful protest held Saturday 8th March 2025 was orchestrated by “bad losers,” and that those protesting are the ones responsible for the security problems in the community and it’s environment.

“Without mincing words, the community see the statement as a deliberate attempt to downplay the severity of insecurity in Odo Ape.

“We will like to remind everyone that the issue of insecurity in Odo Ape is real and alarming, a situation that has robbed us of sleep and the livelihood of the citizens are no longer the same.

“In November 2024, three people were kidnapped from their homes, and ransom was paid for their release. Additionally, two people from Agbadu Bunu, including a current councilor, were also kidnapped. Just last January, two farmers, Sunday Ayedero and a Tiv man, were killed on their farm.

“These incidents have created a climate of fear and uncertainties causing many inhabitants and settlers to flee Odo Ape for their safety.

“This heinous acts has been our plight and they are well reported in the mainstream media and all over social media, the chairman and indeed every arm of government cannot be ignorant of our situation.

“It’s therefore disheartening to see the chairman respond to our predicament in a manner we dare say is most insensitive, trivial and which seems to prioritize politics over the well-being and security of the people.

“The government’s efforts to address insecurity in the area hitherto are commendable, but the chairman’s statement undermines these efforts. The issue of insecurity should not be politicized or used to settle scores,” he said.

The people of Odo Ape enjoined the Council Chairman and every stakeholder in the security architecture to build a united front to address this critical issue.

“By our tradition in Odo Ape, we don’t sell land. However, land are given to strangers to farm on and also for residential purposes.

“It’s time to put politics aside and work together to ensure the safety and security of our community.”

Odo Ape Development Association reiterated that the security of lives and property of their people must not become a tool for political agenda.
