For the second time in a week, armed kidnappers have struck in Iyara, the headquarters of Ijumu Local Government Area.

The unknown gunmen struck Iyara on Monday, taking away with them the Chief Imam of the town, Sheikh Kazeem.

The religious leader was said to be relaxing at the frontage of his house along Odokoro road after the Ramadan Tarawi (Asamu) prayers when the heavily armed men suddenly arrived and ordered him to follow them.

Aged 50, the Imam was said to be nursing malaria when the incident occurred.

The kidnappers have not made any contact with the family.

The Caretaker Chairman, Ijumu Local Government, Alhaji Ibrahim Haruna visited the Imam’s house this morning and assured the family that the security agencies in the state had been briefed about the incident and were on the trail of the kidnappers.

Also, the National President, Iyara Development Association (IDA), Alhaji Aliyu Badaki said the community was worried by the development and was working will the relevant security agencies to stem the tide of kidnap-for-ransome incidents in the area.

Recently, passengers in two vehicles said to be conveying a sick person to Ekiti State were waylaid around 1 am at Okekukuru along the Kabba-Iyara Road with no fewer than six of the passengers taken into the forest.
