The Association of Igbo Community in Egbiraland, Kogi state, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other Igbo leaders across the country to expedite the release of the detained leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mr. Nnamdi Kanu.

In a statement signed by Chief Joseph Anikwe (JP), the President-General of IPOB, and addresed to President Tinubu, the Igbo Association said the Supreme Court’s ruling of September 17th, 2025, reversed the earlier ruling by the Court of Appeal, Abuja.

Chief Anikwe said the events surrounding Mr Nnamdi Kanu abduction from Kenya to Nigeria by security operatives, the reopening of the case of his earlier discharge based on the repeal of Terrorism Prevention Act of 2023 and the recent judgement of Supreme Court showed Kanu’s trial is predetermined and political, thus violating the constitution, international law and his fundamental human rights.

According to him, any legal proceeding taken after a repealed law amount to nullity.

The President General referred to the ruling of the Court of Appeal which discharged Kanu, and held that his extraordinary rendition from Kenya striped the Federal High Court of jurisdiction. He noted that the judgement of Supreme Court of December 15, 2023 has remitted Nnamdi Kanu’s case “Binding Discharge” which amounted to gross violation of constitutional and international human right law.

He appealed to President Tinubu to release the IPOB leader based on the above grounds and apply political solution to release Mr Kanu.

He said releasing Nnamdi Kanu will go along way in reassuring the Igbos of adequate protection of their constitutional rights which will in turn guarantee fairness, justice and equity as this will douse built-up tension in the Eastern part of the country as 2027 general elections is fast approaching.
