Ewedu soup is a delicacy in Nigeria. Ewedu soup is a popular soup mostly eaten by the Yoruba tribe in Nigeria. It is very delicious and nutritious and it has a slimy effect when it’s cooked which is very similar to okra.

The soup is usually served with beef stew or fish stew along side with many solid meals most especially, Amala. Come with me as I take you on this journey on how the delicious and nutritious Ewedu soup is prepared.

Ingredients needed are:

• Ewedu (jute) leaves
• Potash
• Crayfish
• Iru (locust beans)
• Ijabe (Ewedu broom) or blender
• Salt to taste
• Seasoning cubes

To begin, pick the leaves from the stem, as you only need the leaves. Then rinse thoroughly until it’s sand free. Place water in a pot, add a small stone of potash (Kaun) and bring the water to boil.

Pour in the washed Ewedu leaves and leave it to continue boiling in water until its soft. Check to see if they have soften and once they are soft enough, proceed to melting it.

To do this, you can use the old fashion method with broom (ijabe) or with a blender. My mom usually use the traditional broom to blend the ewedu manually until it becomes soft.

Go on to add your locust beans, add some crayfish powder, salt and seasoning cubes to taste. Ewedu is paired with stew and eaten along with Amala and is best served hot.

Ewedu soup is very simple to make and it can be paired with other soups such as: tomato stew, gbegiri, egusi and many more. Ewedu leaves can be found in many Nigerian market.

Often times, overcooking the leaf is what makes it loose it viscosity and flavor so you need to be careful to prevent overcooking or undercooking.

Aside its deliciousness, Ewedu soup has numerous health benefits. It contains vitamins such as A, C and E. This vitamins help protect the body from certain diseases. It’s high in fiber, it’s a very rich source of folic acid.

If you’re not very familiar with this dish or if you’re looking to enhance your ewedu recipe, I recommend trying this one.
