A call has been made to government at all levels and relevant stake holders to support Badminton to become a medal spinning game.
Chairman of Kogi State Badminton Association, Honorable Tony Anegwo who made the call in Lokoja noted that other sports like Badminton should be given more priority and recognition like football.
“I think other sports have not been encouraged to sprout in the country, especially in Kogi State, too much attention has been given to football and despite the support and publicity, it can only give one medal, badminton alone can produce up to eight medals not to talk of other games, so we need a huge support from government and well meaning individuals and organization to support in developing other sports,” Hon Anegwo said.
He maintained that the new badminton association in the state has raised the ante in developing the racket game just as he commended the board members for their supports towards encouraging athletes and officials of badminton in Kogi state.
“Badminton is a game that has not been taken seriously in the past, but since this new board come into place, we have been able to raise the stake and most of state competition have been organized and we have had our athletes doing well due to this, some of them went to Abuja Badminton open and they did well, we also had the young players who just came back from Otukpo to represent Kogi state at the school sports festival and they did well by winning medals for the state, so I think we are changing the face of badminton in Kogi State, I want to urge the players and technical officials to remain focused as we will always give them the necessary support, I also want to thank my board members for their supports.”
