The United Nations World Tourism Organization has celebrated has celebrated World Tourism Day on September 27th and is celebrating it’s 37th year in 2017 . This date was chosen as on that day in 1970, the statutes of UNWTO were adopted . The adoption of these statutes is considered a milestone in global tourism.
This year the World Tourism Day theme commenced as “Sustainable Tourism – a Tool for Development” . Every year one country is selected by the General Assembly and hosts the World Tourism Day . This year, Qatar will be hosting the national level festives of the day . Every country celebrates the Tourism Day more enthusiastically . The entire world is excited about the World Tourism Day .
In 2017, the celebration of this World Day focuses on how sustainable tourism can contribute to development and it is held in Doha (Qatar).
Sustainable tourism is defined as tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities. It should thus make optimal use of environmental resources, respect host communities and ensure viable, long-term economic operations so that benefits are equitably distributed among all stakeholders.
It is a positive instrument towards the eradication of poverty, the protection of the environment and the improvement of quality of life, especially in developing countries. Well-designed and well-managed tourism can make a significant contribution to the three dimensions of sustainable development —economic, social and environmental—, has close linkages to other sectors and can create decent jobs and generate trade opportunities.
It is therefore essential for all actors, including companies operating in the sector, to be aware of opportunities and responsibilities alike, and to act accordingly so that their actions leave a positive mark on the society in which they operate and ensure the sustainability of the destination and their businesses.
This year provides a unique opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to sustainability and move forward to ensure the positive impact of well-managed tourism on inclusive and equitable growth, sustainable development and peace.
I would like also to take this opportunity to thank Ph.D Doncas Yina Orga (HOD Tourism Department FPI) , his superb efforts made an essential contribution to the success of our students . Our dearest mother Grace Abutu (immediate past HOD of this noble department) , her thoughtfulness is a gift we will always treasure . Mr George Adah (Departmental Coordinator) , his name is so warm, welcoming and delightful. We felt so pampered . Mrs Adeniyi , her excitement to teach fueled our excitement to learn and for that we are incredibly grateful . Mr Onyabo , thank you for being unbiased. In this day and age, it’s nearly impossible to find a man who doesn’t pick and choose sides. You hear every argument and debate with an open mind, and it makes us feel like our opinion matters . Mr Ekundayo Mejabi , we have sincerely enjoyed the time that we have spent with you during our first year in this noble department.
Given your very busy schedule, we know that it was not always easy or convenient for you to stay with us , and yet you gave so very generously of your time, knowledge, and patience . Thank you for your commitment and assistance . Our gratitude for your contribution to our future success is immeasurable . Once more , you are not only our lecturer , you are our friend, authority and guide, all rolled into one person. We will always be grateful to you for your support and kindness . Daniel Jackson (Departmental President) , he has genuinely showed concern and interest in our students . He is my favorite president because I believe he has done more than what is required of him as a president. He will continue to be my favorite president until I come across more to add to his ranks . Additionally , Martins Alli , Peter Ruth , Celestina Godfrey , Sarah O Isaiah and Flora Joe are extremely nice and brilliant ladies .
I may not always say it, but I mean it whenever I say it . Thank you all for coming to grace and witness this great day, as I ask you all to relax and feed both your eyes and bodies with the World Tourism Day.
