The unemployment market in Nigeria appear to be an ever growing one. No government no matter how good can provide jobs for all its citizenry so any incentive that awakens the entrepreneurial spirit in our youths has the potential for depleting the unemployment market and should be a welcome development. Over and over, it has been proven that entrepreneurship and skill acquisition remain the surest and the most effective route toward satisfactory and sustainable ways to job creation, this is why World Changers Development Initiative, an Ibadan based Non Governmental Organisation has taken a giant step in the right direction organizing a 2- week free skill acquisition and entrepreneurship nationwide for youths called YouLEAP.
The Executive Director of World Changers, Mr Lapinni Akinyemi lamented the situation where young people lack skills for economic empowerment and said “the capacity building training is a response to the recent challenges bedeviling youths in all parts of the country, He believe the programme will enable participants set up their own businesses, reduced poverty, youth unemployment and possibly helped in mitigating conflicts and insurgencies
the initiative which has currently ran over 12 editions in towns in Benue, Kogi, Ogun and Oyo states respectively empowering over 3,000 youths in 26 various skills, ranging from soap making, catering services, Website design, trendy shoes and bag making, POP, computer services, Facial Make up, Event management, driving, hair dressing, bead making ,jewellery works and so on.
Speaking with newsmen and the closing ceremony in Ankpa, the programme Officer, Mr Peter Adah said that one of the major duties of their organisation is to raise change makers and train young people in various skills, as these skills would be helpful in efforts to equip them now and in the nearest future.
The training which closed with an exhibition of products made by the participants from various skills has attending from Ankpa, Kogi state.
In appreciation on behalf of other participants, Miss Glory Idoko thanked the organisers and facilitators for the timely and free gesture towards the youths and prayed that the various state governments, donor agencies and particularly the youths will support and key into the skills acquisition and entrepreneurship programme, noted that the programme was aimed at assisting youths to be self-reliant.
