Government Science Secondary School Ogaminana has emerged second time winner of the National Quiz Competition on Legislature and Democracy organized by the National Institute of Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS).
The competition which was held in GYB Model Science Secondary School, Adankolo, Lokoja had six participating schools drawn from the three senatorial districts in Kogi state.
The first and second runner up of the competition were; Army Day Secondary School, Lokoja and De I can Star International School, Okene respectively.
According to the organizers, the winner would represent the State at the Zonal Competition.
In his address at the occasion, the State Commissioner for Education Science and Technology, Hon. Wemi Jones, thanked the institute for organizing the competition for students and youths, saying that it would promote knowledge of legislature and democracy in Nigeria.
Represented by the Director Educational, Planning, Research and Statistics , Dr. Elizabeth Ahman Anemoku, the Commissioner stated that the State Ministry of Education Science and Technology encouraged synergy with private, government and non governmental organizations to promote teaching and learning in the state.
He noted that the Ministry’s School Adoption and Mentorship Program encouraged individuals to build up students by adopting and mentoring them towards making a better future.
This, according to him, could be done by providing schools with necessary materials, equipment and making the environment more conducive for teaching and learning.
She noted that the Ministry was looking forward for more synergy from individuals and organizations that would enhanced quality education in the State.
Also speaking, the Director General of the National Institute of Legislature and Democratic Studies, Prof. Abubakar Suleiman, who was represented by the State Coordinator of the Institute, Mrs. Salamatu Yakubu said the competition was to broaden the knowledge of students and youths on history, practice and procedure of legislature and encouraged deep understanding of civil and democratic governance.
According to her, the competition which is an annual event was aimed at stimulating the interest of the young students in politics and make them active and proactive in matters relating to legislature and democracy.
Mrs. Salamatu said that the 8th edition was the second time the competition was holding at the national level, adding that the competition started with schools in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja but was expanded to states of the federation by the approval of the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
The Director General, who declared the competition opened, called on all participating schools and students to abide by the rules of the competition in the spirit of sportsmanship and refrained from acts that would derailed the objectives of the competition.
In his address, the Chairman of the occasion, the Secretary STETSCOM, Mr. Hessein Alhassan appreciated the organizers of the competition which according to him would evaluate the teachers, students and the government.
He added that the competition would evaluate the teachers on knowledge impacted, students on the knowledge assimilated and the government on whether the resources spent was yielding results.
Highpoints of the event was the presentation of prizes to the winner and the first and second runner up of the competition.
Students from Crowther Memorial College, Lokoja, Army Day Secondary School, Lokoja, Government Science Secondary School, Ogaminana, De I CAN Star International School, Okene, Our Lady of Schools(OLS), Anyigba and Holy ghost College, Okura Saw- Mill participated in the competition.
