This week’s scorecard series takes a critical and comprehensive look at the performance of His Excellency, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, in the area of security since assuming office in 2024. Security remains one of the most fundamental responsibilities of government, and in a strategically located state like Kogi—often described as the confluence of Nigeria—its importance cannot be overstated.
Kogi State occupies a central position in Nigeria, sharing boundaries with several states. This geographical reality makes it both a gateway and, unfortunately, vulnerable to spillover effects of insecurity from neighboring regions. Over the years, the state has experienced varying degrees of security challenges, including inter-ethnic rivalries, kidnapping, banditry, communal clashes, organized criminality, illegal mining activities, and the infiltration of extremist ideologies. Additionally, emerging factors such as climate change and resource-based conflicts have further complicated the security landscape.
From a historical standpoint, the administration of Alhaji Yahaya Bello (2016–2024) laid a formidable foundation for security management in Kogi State. Through deliberate policies, strategic partnerships with security agencies, and sustained investments in security infrastructure, the Bello administration was able to significantly curb criminal activities and restore a level of public confidence. His efforts earned him recognition and commendations from the Federal Government and various private institutions for reducing the operational capacity of criminal elements within the state.
Building on this legacy, the administration of Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo has demonstrated continuity, resilience, and innovation in tackling security challenges. Despite the evolving nature of threats and the influx of criminal elements from neighboring states such as Kwara and Niger, Governor Ododo has adopted a proactive, intelligence-driven, and multi-dimensional approach to security governance.
One of the hallmarks of his strategy is the disruption of the operational networks of criminal groups. This includes cutting off their supply chains, dismantling logistics networks, destroying arms stockpiles, and limiting access to essential resources such as food and fuel. By targeting the support systems that sustain criminal activities, the administration has been able to weaken their operational capabilities significantly. Furthermore, the arrest and prosecution of collaborators and informants have sent a strong deterrent signal across the state.
In a bid to modernize the state’s security architecture, the Governor has invested in technology-driven solutions, including the procurement of drones for enhanced surveillance and intelligence gathering. These tools have improved situational awareness, enabled real-time monitoring of difficult terrains, and strengthened the response capacity of security agencies.
Complementing these efforts is the consistent provision of operational vehicles, communication gadgets, and logistical support to all security agencies operating within the state. This has not only improved mobility and rapid response but has also boosted the morale of personnel engaged in the fight against insecurity.
A major structural reform introduced by the Ododo administration is the formal integration of the Vigilante Service into the state civil service framework. This strategic move ensures job security, enhances accountability, and institutionalizes community-based security efforts within a formal governance structure. It also bridges the gap between conventional security agencies and local intelligence networks, thereby creating a more cohesive and effective security system.
Governor Ododo’s proactive leadership was further demonstrated in his swift intervention to evacuate Kogi State indigent students from the University of Jos, Plateau State, following rising security threats and attacks in the area. This decisive action underscores his commitment to the safety and welfare of Kogi citizens, regardless of their location.
In addition, the administration has adopted preventive security measures as a core strategy. These include issuing timely public advisories on potential threats, temporarily closing schools and places of worship when credible intelligence suggests possible attacks, and maintaining constant communication with community leaders and stakeholders. Such measures have helped to prevent incidents before they occur, rather than merely responding after the fact.
Another defining feature of Governor Ododo’s approach is his visible and hands-on leadership style. He frequently engages directly with security agencies on the field, providing motivation, support, and strategic direction. This not only strengthens coordination but also reinforces the message that the responsibility of securing Kogi State is a shared mission that must be pursued with unwavering commitment.
Today, Kogi State stands out as one of the safest states in the North-Central region, and indeed across northern Nigeria. This achievement is not accidental, nor is it the result of mere rhetoric. It is the product of deliberate planning, sustained investment, and dynamic leadership.
Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has, within a relatively short period, demonstrated that with the right leadership, political will, and strategic focus, security challenges can be effectively managed. His administration continues to build on existing gains while adapting to new realities, ensuring that Kogi State remains a safe and secure environment for all.
