Kogi state government has been called upon to see to the quick establishment of a state Fiscal Responsibility Commission to serve as monitoring guide for its financial activities.

This was the position reached by media practitioners at the end of a one day sensitization workshop organised by the Kogi State Public Sector Governance Reform and Development Project, KGPSGRD, for journalists held at the State NUJ secretariat in Lokoja.

Journalists at the end of the programme also called on the state House of Assembly for the enactment of relevant legislative laws for the enforcement of sanctions against misuse and misapplication of public funds.

The journalists in their communique also call on the state government and good governance agencies to ensure that campaign on the reform of good governance is extended to the grassroots.

“The establishment of a Fiscal Responsibility Commission will be a panacea for the transparency, accountability and judicious application of state resources”.

The workshop also urged journalists and media houses to concern themselves with investigative and feature reporting on good governance, “Media houses and practitioners should be encouraged to carry out their role in attitudinal change on good governance.

“The role of the media in governance reform and projection of good governance in Kogi state cannot be under estimated. The media involvement in governance will help improve the accountability, transparency and quality in the management of the state resources”.
