  • Comrade Miliki calls for general review of tax laws in Kogi State.

Kogi state government has cancelled the presentation of parents’ tax clearance certificate (TCC) as prerequisites for registration as students in tertiary institutions.

The Chairman, Kogi State Internal Revenue Services (KGIRS), Sule Enehe made this known in Lokoja on Tuesday.

He said the governor ordered that the decision of the revenue agency and the circular mandating parents to present their tax clearance certificate as prerequisites for students enrolment be stopped immediately.

“The decision by the Governor followed the public outcry. The governor said his administration will not inflict pain on the citizens.

“The Governor, however, urge citizens to pay their taxes and update their tax payment as at scheduled,” he said.

He emphasised the importance of tax compliance, warning that tax evasion remains a punishable offence.

Reacting to the policy reversal, the Executive Director, Conscience for Human Rights and Conflicts Resolution (CHRCR), Comrade Idris Miliki Abdul said it was a commendable decision.

Miliki said since governments are put in place by the people, every policy should reflect on genuine welfare and well-being of the people.

He called for the general review of tax laws in Kogi State, in conjunction and collaboration with relevant stakeholders in the state.

“We have local people that still finds it difficult to survive based on the situation and reality of the moment. Every major policy of government, such as this one under review, should be subject to citizens engagement to prevent wrong impressions about government intentions,” he said.
