Government Day Secondary School have reclaimed the U17 Governor Independence Cup after they defeated counterparts from Bishop Delisle 3-0 in the final played at the Lokoja Confluence Stadium, Kogi State on Wednesday.

The two-week long competition which had eight schools participating amidst the Ebola Virus outbreak, was organised by Gee Touch World and Events in collaboration with the Kogi State Ministry of Youths and Sports and Education not only to commemorates the Independence Day, but also discovers grassroots talents.

Speaking at the finals, the Kogi Commissioner of Youths and Sports, Honorable Attah Ikani Sule, who represented the governor Idris Wada, described the organising of a ‘successful’ schools championship as applaud and expressed government readiness to partner with individuals, privates and corporate organisations to promote grassroots sports in the state.

Sule also promised to reward the winners of the competition and stressed the resolve of the state government to appreciate athletes and officials, who win laurels at national and international championship for the state.

However, Grace Eleojo Adamu, the Chief Executive Officer [CEO] of the organising firm, Gee Touch World and Events, congratulated the winners and promised the vision of Governor Independence Cup will be ‘sustained’.

Adamu said the competition was one of many visions of her firm which were targeted on youths and sports development executed which include Kogi Talent [Music] Hunt, Campuses Dynamite [KSU] and Miss Ultimate Kogi among others.

The first edition of the Governor Independence Cup initially named ‘Gee Touch Independence Cup’, was held on 1st October 2013 and won by current champions, Government Day Secondary School.
