Flood: Kogi Takes Pro-active Steps, Begins Construction of Temporary Camps in 9 LGAs

Kogi State Government has begun the building of temporary rehabilitation camps in the nine affected Local Government Areas, devastated by last year’s flood.

Capt Idris Wada, the Kogi State Governor stated this when he received the sum of Three Hundred Thousand Naira and Seventy Five Kobo as donation from fifty staff of Central Bank of Nigeria, Lokoja  Branch.

The State Governor who was represented by his Deputy, Yomi Awoniyi, said towards ensuring that school children are not displaced as was experienced last year and in view of the 2013 NIMET’s prediction that the flood will be severe this year, the State Government he disclosed has started putting in place infrastructures in flood prone Local Government Areas as temporary houses to cater for would be displaced victims.

The make-shift settlement would have basic facilities and utilities where displaced persons can temporarily be relocated to in the event of another flood disaster rather than using schools.

Already land he noted has been acquired and cleared with hundred contractors already given the nod to begin the building of permanent houses for relocation of some people living along flood plain areas in the State capital.

While he noted that the government is working seriously not to be caught napping by the flood this year, he however prayed that the prediction by NIMET falls short of expectation.

Wada described the donation of the CBN staff as coming in good time, said it will enable early preparation towards reducing the impact of the flood.

The State Governor thanked all those who stood by the State during last year’s flood, said the funds received by the State were judiciously used in constructing damaged roads, rebuilding schools and infrastructure while those affected were equally assisted to get back on their feel.

In his speech, Mr. Bafai Musa Bagai, Lokoja Branch Controller of CBN, said the donation from the staff followed the devastation caused by last year’s flood.

While describing the contribution as modest, thanked the State Government for the on-going rehabilitation of the road leading to the CBN office, along Hassan Katsina way.
