FG Should Halt N5 Billion Kogi Palliative Fund Until After Governorship Election

The National Economic Council (NEC) on Thursday approved a N5 billion palliative fund for each state in Nigeria, including the Federal Capital Territory. This move is aimed at alleviating the impact of fuel subsidy removal by the President Ahmed Bola Tinubu-led administration.

While this allocation is a positive step, some concerns have arisen. Particularly, releasing such a substantial sum to Kogi State during the heated lead-up to its upcoming governorship election, slated for November 11, 2023, might not be prudent. With the state’s history of facing challenges under the current leadership, doubts arise about the proper utilization of these funds.

The proposal suggests withholding the fund until after the election. This delay, aimed at creating a conducive environment for a fair electoral process, doesn’t equate to denying the people much-needed relief. The incumbent Governor Yahaya Bello’s involvement in the election, promoting his relative as a candidate, adds complexity to the situation.

By deferring the release of the funds, President Tinubu’s administration would establish a level playing field and a legacy of fair elections. This strategy mirrors a precedent from 2015 when bailout funds were withheld due to suspicions of diversion into electioneering.

With INEC lifting the campaign ban and concerns about electoral violence and financial inducements, it’s crucial for the government to minimize these issues. Opposition parties and citizens advocate for postponing the palliative fund release in the interest of fairness, equity, and transparency until after the governorship election.
