Vice Chancellor of Federal University, Lokoja (FUL), Prof. Angela Freeman Miri on Saturday said the institution is giving priority attention to accelerated infrastructure development to enable timely movement to the institution’s permanent site.
Miri who disclosed this at a press conference to mark her one-year-in-office in Lokoja said there was need for development of infrastructure and related facilities to adequately accommodate the university’s programmes at the permanent site.
She said that the road since her assumption of duty as the Vice-Chancellor of the university on February 25, 2016, had been “gallopy” but she trudged on adding that her vision was to drive the institution as a new model of a well-run world class university.
The Vice Chancellor expressed delight over the Federal Government’s take-off supplementation support of N2 billion to each of the 12 Federal Universities for Special High Impact Projects and to raise the standard and quality of public tertiary institutions in the country.
She said that the support was meant to be used for programmes upgrade and the provision of physical infrastructure for teaching and learning adding that it would further fast-track the movement to the Permanent site.
On strategic partnership, she said partnership and collaborations had been sough with Kogi State Government, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Ltd, the Petroleum Development Trust Funds (PTDF), the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) among others for various project interventions.
She said that some new faculties along with the Law faculty to be named after late Minister of State for Labour and Employment, James Ocholi (SAN), would soon be established to support full exploitation of mineral and other natural resources in the state.
Miri held that the university had the advantage of being located in an environment that had a wide range of potentials adding, “Our goal is to support the full exploitation of these potentials as a research-oriented institution.
“In Lokoja and Kogi State in general, there is hardly any resources that is not available. It is a centre of agriculture, solid minerals, oil and other natural resources.
“Through our academic programmes and specialized centres, we will support the exploitation of the natural resources as well as the tourism industry in the state”, she added.
She said that the university, in addition to its primary role, planned to develop and strengthen diverse academic programmes that would provide opportunities for young Nigerians to excel in diverse fields of human endeavour.
Miri however called for partnership from government, individuals, the university environment and other stakeholders saying, “Partnership is key to attaining our noble goals for this university and the Nigerian nation.”
