The immediate past speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Umar Ahmed Imam has has dumped the the governing All Progressive Congress (APC) for the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Imam, who announced his defection on Sunday  in Lokoja, said he had to take the decision because he had for long been shut out of the APC’s affairs in the state and no longer recognised as a member of the party right from his ward down to the state level.
He said he had waited for several months, hoping that the APC leadership would encourage participation of every party member in its affairs but rather the division and crisis continued.
“It is no longer news that the APC has equally imposed a candidate for the forthcoming House of representative Bye-election to fill in the vacancy occasioned by the death of the member representing Lokoja/Kogi Federal constituency without complying with the rules of internal democracy.
“Therefore, the decision to defect from the APC is based on the foregoing and the continued fractionalization of the party at both the national and state levels given the leadership crisis within the party”, he said.

Imam also declared his interest to contest the August 11 bye-election to fill the vacant seat for Lokoja/Kogi Federal constituency under the platform of his new party, the SDP
