A foremost political group in Kogi State, Confluence Patriots, has urged the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, to ensure diligent prosecution of Alhaji Yahaya Adoza Bello, a former Governor of the state who is currently being tried before two courts alongside Umar Shuaibu Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu, on a 16 and 19 – counts charges bordering on criminal breach of trust and money laundering to the tune of N110.4billion and N80billion respectively.
The group, through its Head of Media and Strategic Communication, Dr Yusuf Adama made this known in a statement available to newsmen in Lokoja on Friday, emphasizing the need for the commission to ensure diligent prosecution of the former governor to serve as deterrent to serving and future governors of the state.
“As the trail of Alhaji Yahaya Bello is set to commence tentatively, it is pertinent to note that there is a growing concern over corruption at this present time. The greater recognition that corruption can have a serious adverse impact on the development of a country cannot be overemphasized. This is the more reason why the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission whose primary responsibility it is to fight corruption in Nigeria as affirmed by the Supreme Court must discharge its constitutional responsibility no matter whose ox is gored for the collective good of the country.
“It is on this note that we call on the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) Ola Olukoyede to ensure diligent prosecution of Alhaji Yahaya Adoza Bello Former Governor of Kogi State to serve as deterrent to both serving and future governors of the state from stealing the resources meant for the development of the state,” the statement read in part.
The group commended the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Ola Olukoyede for his giant strides in the fight against corruption and corrupt persons in Nigeria.
