Member representing Idah/Igalamela/Ibaji/Ofu Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Emmanuel Makoji Egwu has kept his pledge to to pay the WAEC/NECO fees of best performing students in public schools in his constituency.
The Idah born federal lawmaker gave out checks to forty beneficiaries selected from ten public schools each from the four local government areas in the constituency in a colourful ceremony held at his residence in Idah.
The students were selected based on their performances in the Transition Examination in SS II. In addition, one student with disability was selected from each of the four local governments in the constituency to benefit from the scheme.
Speaking during the ceremony, Hon. Egwu stated that the gesture was in fulfillment of his electioneering campaign pledged to the people of the constituency. ‘When I was going to all all the nooks and crannies of my constituency during my electioneering campaign, I promised my people that one of my cardinal ten points agenda was to provide educational scholarships. That pledge is what I am fulfilling today” he said.
Hon. Egwu thanked the people for giving him the opportunity to represent them in the House of Representatives and promised not to let them down. He pledged to institutionalise his scholarship scheme in order to ensure the gesture out lives his present office and his life as a person. He however called on the beneficiaries to use the opportunity to excel in the examinations. He used the occasion to formally announce the launch of the Emmanuel Makoji Egwu Foundation to cater for the less privileged members of the society.
In his remark, the Catholic Bishop of Idah Diocese, Rt. Rv. Dr. Anthony Adaji congratulated the beneficiaries and commended Hon. Egwu for investing in the lives of future leaders. He also called on other privileged members of the society to emulate the kind gesture of Hon. Egwu. ‘I am here today because many people invested in me. Makoji is doing this today because people invested in him” he said.
Other speakers at the occasion, including the Administrator of Ofu LGA, Hon. Abu Egbiti, former Chairman of Igalamela-Odolu LGA, Com. Zakito Umar similarly praised Hon. Egwu and charged him to continue his purposeful charitable acts.
