Egbira people in Kano and Jigawa states have launched N35m appeal funds for the completion of its secretariat located in Kano state.
The project was meant to give Egbira people a sense of belonging away from their home state in the spirit of one Nigeria.
The Egbira people considered the project as a unifying factor that would cement relationship between them and their host communities in the two states.
The Kogi state Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, represented by the state’s Commissioner for Health, Dr. Saka Audu Haruna, emphasized the need for the ethnic groups in Kogi state to be united.
The governor said Egbira House in Kano state was in tandem with his government quest to uniting and giving the indigenes of Kogi state a sense of belonging, assuring that government would do everything possible to ensure speedy completion of the secretariat.
A former Vice Chancellor, University of Abuja, Professor Nuhu Yakubu advised Nigerians to always emphasised the factors that unite them rather than dwelling on the differences that see them apart, saying Nigeria’s greatness lies in its diversity.
Yakubu, who was the guest speaker at the fund raising, said Nigerians should look beyond the indigene settler phenomenon for the unity of the country, stressing that the project would go a long way in cementing relationship between Egbira and their host communities.
“The project is a pointer to other states that there is advantage in our unity. Although we are diverse, we have different languages, we practice different religions, but we still belong to common thing which is the geographical space called Nigeria.
“Anywhere you are going, you don’t go with the passport of your ethnic group neither with that of you region or your state, you go with Nigerian passport, the money you spend is Nigerian money, so you can see we have so much in common and that is actually what we should be proud of,” he noted.
Ohinoyi Egbira, Kano and Jigawa state, Alhaji Aliyu Abdulmalik called on Egbira people in the two states to live in peace with one another and to reciprocate the kindness extended to them by their host communities in the respective states.
