Dr Iyela Ajayi has bowed out as the Provost of the Federal College of Education , Okene, with a charge to staff and students to sustain the prevailing peace in the institution.
Ajayi who is leaving after completing his eight-year tenure told newsmen in Okene that the school witnessed tremendous physical transformation and peace under him.
“Going by the history of this college, peace is the greatest legacy I am leaving behind.
“Before my appointment, the college was known for crisis. No Provost goes through without running into one crisis or the other, but during my tenure, no strike by staff, no riot by students,” he explained.
Ajayi admonished staff and students not to disrupt the existing and cordial atmosphere, urging them that they should continue to relate with one and other as children of the same family.
According to him, his glorious moment as the Provost of the college came in 2016 when the NCE and the degree programmes of the college were given full accreditations by the National University Commission and the National Commission for Colleges of Education.
“This is a rare feat in Nigeria. The college under my watch was certified 100 per cent okay in staffing and quality of academic contents,” he said.
He said the school had been transformed to a level that it can easily be upgraded to full fledge university.
“After many failed attempts, I was able to introduce degree programme and three sets have successfully graduated with good results , thus positioning it as one of the leading colleges of education in Nigeria,” he stated.
Ajayi listed geography, history, economics, adult education and early childhood / care education as new courses introduced during his eight-year tenure to increase the number of courses in the school from 27 to 32.
He said that three names had been forwarded to the Federal Government as his likely successors, saying that one of them will be picked as Provost very soon.
The outgoing Provost thanked staff and students for their support, cooperation and understanding, appealing to them to extend the same to his successor.
