As Nigeria marks another Democracy Day, retired military officer, Brigadier General Benjamin Ipinyomi (rtd), has commended Nigerians for their resilience and commitment to democratic governance despite daunting challenges.

In a goodwill message released on Wednesday ahead of the 2025 Democracy Day celebration, Ipinyomi praised the spirit of unity and perseverance that Nigerians continue to exhibit in the face of economic and security difficulties.

The retired General noted that democracy in Nigeria has endured for over two decades due to the collective will of the people and the sacrifices of patriots who continue to believe in a better nation.

“Democracy is not just a system of government; it is a reflection of our collective determination to build a just, fair, and progressive society,” he said.

Ipinyomi, who served meritoriously in the Nigerian Army before retirement, called on governments at all levels to redouble their efforts in addressing the lingering issues of insecurity, poverty, and infrastructural decay.

According to him, “The resilience of Nigerians must be matched with deliberate policies and actions from government to improve the quality of lives, especially in rural and underserved areas.”

He stressed that the dividends of democracy would only be meaningful when citizens enjoy safety, access to quality healthcare, education, and economic opportunities.

He further urged leaders across the country to use the occasion of Democracy Day to reflect on the aspirations of the founding fathers of Nigeria’s democracy and recommit to good governance and accountability.

Ipinyomi also encouraged citizens to remain active participants in the democratic process, noting that the strength of democracy lies in an informed and engaged populace.

“Nation building is a collective task. Let us continue to support our institutions, hold our leaders accountable, and pray for the peace and progress of our dear country,” he added.

The retired General concluded by expressing optimism about Nigeria’s future, stating that with purposeful leadership and citizen cooperation, the country can overcome its present challenges and achieve greatness.
