Kogi State Deputy Governor, Yomi Awoniyi, has assured that contractors handling the post flood housing estate in Lokoja will meet up the target date of completion before the peak of the rains.

The Deputy Governor made the disclosure in an interview following the concern and panic raised by the rising water level of the Rivers Niger and Benue by residents of the state capital living along the flood plains.

Awoniyi, assured that the houses will be ready in another eight weeks adding that the money available for completion for the project has been set aside, urged the contractors to speed up the completion period.

Similarly, the Deputy Governor explained that the state will run fourteen camps as against the 82 used last year for better management.

The camps he added will be well equipped with schools, water and improved sanitary condition, however appealed to the people to appreciate the loss the state and people suffered last year by accepting the offer made for those living on flood planes to move to higher ground.

Awoniyi noted that the state learnt important lessons following from last year’s flood on emergency management which has now become a reality occasioned by climate change ,said the human capacity in the State Emergency Management Agency has since been enhanced through capacity training to handle natural disasters the state may witness.

While noting that people are more attached to where they live, thus making it difficult for them to move from flood plain areas,he appealed to the people to place value on their lives and heed the warning call and relocate to higher ground.
