Member representing Ankpa II State Assembly and the Deputy Chief Whip, Kogi State House of Assembly, Honourable Rabiu Momoh Alfa has described the gully erosion menace in his constituency as the worse ecological problem and devastating, appealed to the state government to take urgent step to address the situation.
Hon Rabiu who made the appeal on his constituency infrastructure tour with the team of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to Ankpa Local Government Area said the devastating effect of gully erosion has rendered many people displaced from their homes with lose of businesses and economic trees, noting that government’s quick response to control the erosion in the area remained the only option that can save the situation.
Hon Rabiu who decried the decayed infrastructure in his constituency appealed to the government to rehabilitate the ramshackle facilities such as primary healthcare centres, boreholes, classroom blocks, and other basic amenities while urging the government to provide more new infrastructure for the communities. Hon Rabiu said the erosion along Ejema-Afo road which has cut apart the two major villages in his constituency need urgent intervention.
In his response, the Special Adviser on SDGs to the governor, Hon Abdulmuminu Okara said the government of Kogi State under the leadership of His Excellency, Alhaji Yahaya Bello has rural development at the top of its agenda. He said the objectives of the tour was among other things to ascertain the functionality of the previous SDGs projects and to also identify various communities that are bereft of basic infrastructure.
He assured Hon Rabiu and the people of Ankpa ii of government’s readiness to address the erosion and other infrastructural challenges in the area. He said the SDGs mainly intervene in the areas of Water, Education and health and assured the people of Ankpa ii that team of engineers will be mobilised to various erosion sites in the constituency by next week and said medical personnel shall be deployed with immediate effect to the clinics where their services are urgently needed by next week.
Communities and facilities visited are Enjema Water project, Enjema erosion site, Enjema-Afo Gamgam road, Afo-Gamgam water project, Afo-Gamagam erosion site, Enabo Healthcare Centre, Olufofo water project and erosion site and Ofugo gully erosion site.
