Chat AI or conversational artificial intelligence is a type of technology that allows users to have a natural sounding conversation with a computer program. Chat AI has come a long way in recent years and it now being used in a variety of application from education to healthcare.
Recently, they have been many varieties of Chat artificial intelligency (AI), the most common one is the ChatGPT that was first developed in 2018 by Open AI, the most easy and accessible ones is the WhatsApp and Snapchat Chat AI which is capable of having natural sounding conversation with human and reply messages in seconds helping human especially students to access information quickly and easily.
Chat AI has both its advantages and its disadvantages for students, Chat AI can be a very powerful tool for learning and research, helping students access information quickly and easily, giving instant feedback on assignments. It can also be used to practice writing skill and generate ideas by students.
Some consequences on the use of Chat AI as highlighted by some students of Prince Abubakar Audu University is that it may lead to lack of critical thinking, make students lazy learners, Students may not put effort to research and learn things on their own, and again it may lead to examination malpractice, because some students may tend to smuggle in their phone into the exam hall and use the Chat AI to answer questions.
Micheal Adinoyi, a 300 level student of Mass Communication of Prince Abubakar Audu University, says Chat AI is a cheat code when it comes to researching. He said “Ordinarily students are to sit, read and research on assignments given to them but artificial intelligence is just a cheat code for that, it is just like you are coping and pasting when you do not even have knowledge for what you are doing”.
Favour Oyiza Emmanuel, a 300 level law student of Prince Abubakar Audu University, says she is been enjoying the AI and it is seriously helping her academically and the only negative aspect she sees is it has been making her lazy especially in assignment where she has to do research but she will just relax since she has AI to help her out.
On how best she has used the Chat AI, she said “the AI has been helping me academically since I got it from a friend, for instance I go on Google and I search for either a case or a topic, they will definitely give you the case as per law student but will not break it down for more understanding, then I could still need to go meet some mate or a senior colleague for more understanding, but AI will bring everything straight up to you and break it down to simple meaning that you can easily understand”.
She also said Chat AI has more impact on students than negative because her test and assignments has been more easier for her thanks to AI.
Artificial intelligence are designed to ease the affairs of human so as Chat AI has been easing the affairs of students. Chat AI has foster good learning ability and a faster understanding for the students easing the long process method of going on research before you could get and answer. But to note, there is nothing that has advantage without disadvantage, students must be aware of the disadvantage of Chat AI and should not abuse it.
