The Bunu people of the Kabba-Bunu local government area of Kogi state are predominantly into agriculture as the cornerstone of their economy, but the presence of unwanted visitors otherwise known as bandits has disrupted agricultural activities, as farmers are often afraid to cultivate their fields due to the risk of attacks. This disruption has led to a decline in food production, threatening food security for thousands of people. The displacement of over 5,000 individuals has also resulted in the abandonment of farmlands, exacerbating the food crisis. Banditry has forced many people to flee their homes, abandoning businesses and livelihoods. The economic displacement of individuals and communities has created a ripple effect, affecting local markets, small businesses, and overall economic productivity.
Funny enough, abduction for ransom has become the new money-making venture for kidnappers,
This surge in abductions has instilled a pervasive sense of fear and uncertainty among the populace, with many feeling increasingly vulnerable to such threats.
As a result of insecurity in Bunu axis, many businesses and farming activities are closing down operations and relocating to other States for fear of loss of lives and properties.
Consequently, the Local Government Chairman has not deemed it fit to visit the those villages affected talk less of profer Security solutions.
I therefore challenge Chief Security Adviser to State Government, Comd. Jerry Omodara and Bunu Kings to as a matter of urgency swift to action by having a security summit before our people resulted in self defense.
