Breaking the Money Myth: How Faith-Driven Minds Are Shattering Financial Lies and Building Real Wealth

You are not behind because you are lazy. You are not broke because you are worthless and unworthy. And you are definitely not stuck because God has forgotten you. The truth is, you have been lied to about money—lies that say “Money is not spiritual,” “God will provide—someday,” or “It’s not my fault; I wasn’t born into wealth.” These lies have kept many believers in financial bondage, trapped in a cycle of scarcity and struggle. But it’s time to reject these myths and embrace the reality that wealth is part of God’s plan for His people. Financial success isn’t a worldly pursuit; it’s a kingdom assignment.

David Green, founder of Hobby Lobby, once said, “I fully believe that tithing and giving were the foundation for all of my wealth.” Green, alongside other Christian billionaires like Strive Masiyiwa, understands that wealth, when rooted in faith, can be a powerful tool for fulfilling God’s purpose. God is not glorified in your poverty. In fact, wealth, when aligned with divine principles, can serve as a platform to bless others and expand His kingdom. This isn’t prosperity preaching; it’s a kingdom revelation. As Christians, it’s time to shift our thinking and understand that abundance is available to us—if we are willing to receive it and steward it well.

For too long, many have believed that financial success is outside the reach of the faithful and when you lay too much emphasis on it they will say you have backslidden and serving mammon, but this is a lie. The Holy Bible speaks of prosperity not as an optional extra but as a part of God’s abundant life for His people. Jesus came to give life—and life more abundantly (John 10:10). But abundance doesn’t just fall from the sky; it requires action. As TB Joshua said, “The riches we claim must have God’s divine approval. When your wealth is rooted in righteousness, it will last and bless generations.” The key is to align your financial pursuits with God’s will and not separate your faith from your finances.

Unfortunately, too many believers are caught in the trap of financial ignorance. Take, for example, a church resident pastor—anointed with great preaching skills, leading a congregation, yet living in financial despair. This pastor is well-versed in all areas of sound biblical teachings, yet he has found himself borrowing money from more than 50 people. Despite his prayers, sermons, and fervent belief, he is unable to repay these debts. Worse still, he is stranded, unable to feed himself, let alone care for his family. His situation exposes a harsh reality: faith without practical financial wisdom leaves believers in a vulnerable position, caught between promises of prosperity and the harsh reality of financial mismanagement.

Then there’s the young church chorister—a talented and devout young woman who believed deeply in the teachings about faith and prosperity, yet found herself struggling financially. Despite her best efforts, the principles she was taught seemed more like theory than a practical guide to living abundantly. Faced with mounting bills and a lack of resources, she began to feel desperate. Eventually, she resorted to stripping for money—choosing a path that contradicted her values but felt like the only viable option to survive. This painful choice reflects the dangerous consequences of a belief system that disconnects faith from financial reality. When a Christian’s faith in God’s provision isn’t paired with practical financial understanding, desperation can lead them down paths they never thought possible.

Even more insidious is the myth that “altars or powers from my father’s house are fighting me to be poor.” This belief, deeply entrenched in some Christian circles, suggests that generational curses or ancestral forces are responsible for financial struggles. While spiritual warfare is real, and breaking generational curses is important, this myth shifts the focus away from personal responsibility and practical steps for wealth creation. It creates a false narrative that external forces are always to blame for one’s financial status, leaving individuals powerless to take charge of their financial future. The truth is that while spiritual battles exist, God has already given us the tools to break free from poverty and establish generational wealth. As believers, it is essential to focus on renewing our minds, acquiring knowledge, and taking practical steps that align with God’s Word to break free from cycles of poverty.

So, how can a believer break free from the financial lies that have held them captive and unlock the secret to financial freedom? First, they must shift their mindset and adopt the belief that wealth is a tool for kingdom expansion. Money isn’t evil; it’s a resource that, when used wisely, can bring glory to God. As Pastor Chris Oyakhilome wisely says, “Your thoughts shape your future.” Therefore, it’s crucial to renew your mind and understand that wealth, in God’s will, is part of His abundant life for you.

However, faith alone is not enough. Faith must be paired with knowledge. Too often, believers are not taught how to manage their finances wisely. It’s time to change that. Investing in financial literacy is key to building wealth. Proverbs 24:3-4 tells us, “By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established.” Therefore, acquiring knowledge through books, mentorship, and financial education is essential. This empowers believers to take control of their financial futures and make informed decisions.

Alongside financial education, believers must cultivate a lifestyle of generosity and tithing. The Holy Bible emphasizes the importance of sowing into the kingdom, and many Christian billionaires, such as David Green, attribute their wealth to their commitment to tithing and giving. God blesses those who give. As Myles Munroe said, “God never gave Adam money. He gave him ideas, opportunities, and a garden to manage.” Wealth comes when we steward what God has given us and give back to His work. Generosity unlocks the doors of abundance and positions us for greater blessings.

Moreover, believers must embrace entrepreneurship as a tool to break free from poverty. Strive Masiyiwa, a Christian billionaire, affirms, “The Holy Bible has no problem with business or entrepreneurship. In fact, it encourages it.” Entrepreneurship provides an opportunity to create wealth not only for yourself but also for others. It’s time to stop waiting for a miracle you don’t have the faith and start building. Whether it’s starting a business, investing, or finding innovative ways to generate income, entrepreneurship empowers believers to take control of their financial destinies and break free from the cycle of scarcity.

Financial freedom also requires discipline. It’s important to manage resources wisely, avoid unnecessary debt, and live within your means. Proverbs 21:20 says, “The wise store up choice food and olive oil, but fools gulp theirs down.” Discipline in saving, budgeting, and investing leads to long-term financial security. It’s about making smart choices with your money and staying committed to your financial goals. It takes a wise man of faith to say “God will provide”.

Lastly, believers must understand that faith without works is dead. In the same way that we trust God for our salvation, we must trust Him for our financial breakthrough. As James 2:26 says, “As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead.” Therefore, while trusting God for a financial breakthrough, it’s crucial to take practical steps toward achieving that goal. Work diligently, invest wisely, and remain faithful to the principles God has set in place. Most christian business persons are quick to eat their first profits. Its wrong. Before eating profits use it to earn more.

The time to break free from financial lies is now. Wealth and prosperity are within your reach, but you must change your mindset, invest in financial literacy, embrace generosity, and take practical steps toward wealth creation. God has called you to be the head and not the tail, the lender and not the borrower. It’s time to claim the abundant life He has promised you.

To your breakthrough,
