Boko Haram: KSU Lecturer, 2 Others Charged With Terrorism

A Kogi State University (KSU) lecturer and two other persons were yesterday arraigned by the office of the Attorney General of the Federation over alleged plot to attack Igalaland in Kogi State on behalf of the Boko Haram insurgents.

Muhammed Yunus (PhD), Salami Abdullahi and Musa Umar were arraigned on an eight count charges bordering on conspiracy and terrorism.

According to the charges brought by state counsel N.B. Jones-Nebo, the three accused persons acquired and buried underground weapons such as AK 47 rifles, two magazines and 60 rounds of ammunition between May and October, 2013 in Ayingba, Kogi State with intent to harm the population in the state.

The accused persons were further alleged to have attended meetings at a fuel station owned by Salami Abdullahi near Ayingba Market Road and at No 24 Iyale Road and other places at Ayingba, Kogi State for purposes of Boko Haram attacks.

While Yunus and Umar were alleged to have agreed to recruit members for the Boko Haram sect, Abdullahi was accused of knowingly permitting meetings to be held at his buildings and premises of his filling station and providing funds for their alleged terrorist activities.

The charges were brought under sections 17, 1(2), 16(1), 4, 10 and 13 of the Terrorism Prevention Act, 2013.

The accused persons however pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Justice Gabriel Kolawole remanded the accused persons to Kuje Prisons and fixed February 10 for ruling on application for bail by defence counsels James Ocholi (SAN) and Hassan Liman (SAN).

Before adjourning trial to March 18 and 19, the judge ordered the defence counsels to file and reply prosecution’s processes within 72 hours.

The judge also struck out an application by the State Security Service for extension of the remand of the accused persons earlier obtained in November.
