Twenty five year of Bashir Usman has been diagnosed of Ménière’s disease and needs urgent bilateral cochlear implant to prevent permanent hearing loss.
Bashir, an indigene of Kogi state, is a student of Zamfara State Polytechnic, Talata Mafara.
One a fateful day, Basiru had a severe and terrible fever and was rushed to the Polytechnic’s clinic. Seeing that his medical condition was beyond the clinic, he approached the school for permission to seek further help outside.
Bashiru was rushed back home for the treatment before school resumption, but after a brief relief from the supposed fever, his condition deteriorated further. He was later diagnosed to have meniare – spinning sensation (vertigo), hearing loss, ear ringing (tinnitus) and ear pressure. The vertigo may cause severe nausea and imbalance. Hearing loss may become permanent.
Basiru later approached Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Lokoja, and after some days, he was referred to Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) where an audiologist prescribed bilateral cochlear implant to prevent permanent hearing loss.
Speaking with our reporter, a friend of his, Joseph Mawedo, said Bashir has been heartbroken and downcast due to his inability to undergo on the recommended treatment.
“His hand is single because he has no one to assist him. His sole helper, his father, passed away while he was on sick bed receiving treatment some where in Dekina, Kogi state.
“Before his ailment, Bashiru engaged himself in exporting farm produce from Kogi state to South Eastern parts of the country. He funds his academic pursuits with proceeds from his little business efforts and contributions from his late father.
“Basiru completed his ND programs in 2015 and industrial training in 2016, he then applied for HND program he was offered admission in the same institution. He was running the HND program when the sickness struck him and since April 15, 2017, Basiru has not recovered to go back and complete his program.
“At the moment, Bashiru cannot hear with either of his ears and doctors said his health condition will deteriorate further if left untreated. We, his friends and family, are calling on men and women of goodwill come to his aid and assist him in his dark moments,” he said.
The estimated cost for Bashiru’s treatment is twelve million, one hundred and fifty thousand naira (N12,150,000).
