Austin Okai Says ‘I Put My Trust in God’ as Counsel Withdraws From Defamation Case

The legal counsel to the House of Representatives candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 general elections, Comrade Okai Austin, has withdrawn his services from the ongoing court case bordering on cyberstalking and defamation.

Okai is facing a 16-count charge bordering on cyberstalking and criminal defamation against Kogi Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo.

The legal counsel, J.J. Usman (SAN) announced his withdrawal at the Lokoja High Court 1 on Monday.

Following the counsel’s withdrawal, the Judge, Justice A.A. Ibrahim adjourned the matter to the 16th and 17th July for mention to enable the defendant get a counsel.

Speaking with newsmen after the court session, Okai said “I put my trust in God”. However, efforts to speak with the counsel proved abortive as he declined to speak.

Okai is facing trial for his allegation on the social media that the Kogi State Governor allegedly diverted billions of naira meant for the local government councils in the state as well as some agencies under the state government.

He has, however, tendered a public apology to the governor and others mentioned in his report over the allegation he made, pointing out that he was misled and had little information on the allegation.

Though Okai presently enjoys bail, the state government is yet to withdraw the case from court.
