Kogi-born activist, Comrade Austin Okai has been conferred with the prestigious SDGs Pillar of Humanitarian Award by the United Nations Economic and Social Council Programme (UNESC) for his philanthropic services, representing voice for the voiceless and telling power the truth despite several threats.
The award was presented to the political activist at a ceremony on Monday afternoon in Abuja to mark the 2021 UN World Humanitarian Day.
Expressing his happiness over the honour, Okai said he fully supports the UNESC in its endeavors.
“This is a rare honour. UN recognition is very special. I have done whatever little I have done, in my own humble way, for my fellow countrymen without any expectations. However, to be recognised and awarded feels good. I will continually stand in solidarity with the world’s most vulnerable people by using these hashtags in your social media activities #TheHumanRace #WorldHumanitarianDay.
“I fully support the UNESC in its endeavours to achieve the SDGs by 2030. Planet Earth and mankind will greatly benefit from the implementation of these goals,” he said.
With this prestigious honour, Comrade Austin Okai joins the likes of Bishop Dr. Hendricks Omale JP., Mr. Joseph Oche Godwin, Brig. Gen. Paul Boroh, and the 37th General Officer Commanding (GOC), Maj.-Gen Danjuma Alli-Keffi as ambassadors of UNESC.
