Anyigba has experienced its own fair share of bank robberies. A couple of weeks ago, it was gathered that virtually all the commercial banks operating in the town closed shop when rumour became rife that armed bandits are planning to strike.

A lecturer in one of the departments in the university, last week, had his home visited twice by armed robbers within 72 hours.

Recounting his ordeal, the lecturer who lives off-campus said on the first night, while watching television, he discovered that his power generating set had suddenly stopped. He went out to see what had happened, in the process, he noticed some human shadows and he promptly retreated. The robbers kept pressure on the door but from behind, he held firm holding down one of the machetes being used on the door.

He made some frantic calls and in a matter of minutes, he mobilised support that put the robbers who were not giving up on accessing his apartment to flight. Forty-eight hours after, they were back.

According to him, they stormed his apartment around 2.30am vowing to kill him for daring them in the first instance, he escaped and they did not gain access into his apartment. He has since fled his home with his family.

It was learnt that areas mostly under armed robbery threats are far removed from the heart of the town. A cross section of residents in such areas who spoke to The Graphic appealed to security agencies to extend patrol activities to their areas because, according to them, they are under grave security threat.
