Former Kogi State governor Prince Abubakar Audu has said that internal democracy within the political parties is the only means of achieving true democracy in the country.
Audu stated this at the weekend during the congress held in Lokoja to elect the party’s executives in the state.
He said true democracy can only be achieved when party members are allowed to choose candidates of their choice without interference by the party leadership at any level.
He said: “In our party, we don’t believe in imposition of candidates, we believe in true democracy and we allow people to elect candidates of their choice so that they can have more confidence in the party and the leadership of the party. APC has set a pace for other political parties in the country to emulate through its peaceful conduct of the state congresses.”
Chairman of the state congress committee, Dr. Saadu Ayinla Alanamu, said the congress was conducted in a peaceful atmosphere, devoid of rancor.
He said with the large turnout of the delegates and party supporters, APC will capture many states in the 2015 general election.
In his speech, state chairman of the party, Alhaji Haddy Ametuo said the APC would take over the state from the PDP, calling on party supporters to join force with the new executives to effect the desired change in the state.
