Ever since assuming office as the 5th Executive Governor of Kogi State, Usman Ododo has encountered a series of obstacles that have cast doubt on the validity of his election win. Ongoing scrutiny at the Kogi State election petition tribunal has only added to the uncertainty surrounding his leadership. The prevailing narrative characterizes the APC-led administration in Kogi State as a time of setbacks.

There are various critical areas of concern that require attention. Insecurity continues to escalate, while the increasing unemployment rates exacerbate the state’s problems. The absence of a clear leadership direction, along with the persistent issue of unpaid gratuities and pensions, further complicates matters. Moreover, the Governor’s restricted access to his official office and residence, reportedly due to the influence of his predecessor, has made it more difficult for him to effectively fulfill his duties, leading him to work remotely.

It is becoming increasingly evident that Ododo is merely a symbolic figurehead, with his predecessor, Yahaya Bello, effectively running the show. The incident where Ododo allegedly used his executive power to shield Bello from arrest by the EFCC, who were at his Abuja residence to apprehend him for embezzling over ₦80 billion from Kogi state’s coffers, raises serious questions about Ododo’s role.

We are also aware of the former governor Bello’s desperate attempts to use financial incentives to sway the 2023 governorship election tribunal in favor of Ododo, in order to continue concealing his wrongdoings in the state. We trust that the judiciary, often seen as the last resort for justice will not compromise their integrity by dismissing the petitions on technicalities. Should they betray their duty and pervert justice, divine retribution will befall them and their descendants.

We cannot afford to remain complacent with extreme poverty amidst abundant resources. Folding our arms may make it difficult for us to survive the needless unslaught on our collective integrity as citizens of Kogi state. It is therefore essential for stakeholders to carefully analyze the current narrative of mediocrity in governance and abstain from disseminating false narratives that obscure the evident deficiencies seen in Governor Ododo’s first 100 days in office. Instead, there is an immediate requirement for visionary leadership capable of utilizing the state’s abundant potential and directing it towards a trajectory of sustainable development, thereby contributing to the broader national agenda.

To all the citizens of Kogi state, rest assured that this phase shall come to an end. A brighter day awaits us in the nearest future.
