On behalf of Kogi Central Person with Disability (PWDs), I wish to respectfully draw the attention of Distinguished Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, to a matter of urgent concern regarding the recent empowerment exercise conducted in the district.
The initiative, widely recognized as one of the most significant empowerment programs in the history of Kogi Central, unfortunately excluded Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) from the exercise is my concerned. This oversight has sparked deep concern within the disability community, especially considering the legal mandate that stipulates a minimum of 5% inclusion for PWDs in all government programs and opportunities. Obviously, our members were sidelined from all these programs.
My findings reveal that several PWDs who attempted to participate in the program were left humiliated by demeaning remarks from some coordinators. Like “Who invited you?” and “Even if you were given a motorcycle or KEKE, how would you ride it?” Mocking our members….. such statement is deeply painful and stands in sharp contrast to the spirit of the Disability Right Act, which promotes dignity, respect and equal opportunity for all……
It is particularly disheartening that such exclusion occurred under the leadership of Senator Natasha, a lawmaker entrusted with the responsibility of championing inclusion and equity. The disability community has stood firmly behind her, offering unwavering support and casting their votes with the belief that she would be a defender of their rights and welfare. Regrettably, recent appointments and empowerment distributions have not reflected this trust.
This message is not intended as criticism but as a heartfelt appeal for reflection, redress, and renewed commitment. We believe in Senator Natasha’s leadership and her capacity to correct this oversight and ensure that future initiatives are truly inclusive.
As a community, I want to use this medium to appeal that the newly constructed market in Oboreke Ihima in Ikehi LG which comprises of 80 shops. We strongly request that a specific percentage should be reserved for female PWDs who often face double layers of discrimination.
We call on Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to take immediate and deliberate action to ensure the full inclusion of PWDs in all empowerment and development programs moving forward.
