On Saturday, the scheduled National Assembly re-run election in the 21 polling units of Ajaokuta Federal Constituency will take place. It will, no doubt, be a crucial moment again to test our political maturity and electoral relevance.
Like in the eclipse of the moon, the political horse-trading in the area has reached its feverish pitch with the two contending political parties coming out strategizing towards the re-run election of 30th November, 2019.
Keen observers of politics in Ajaokuta are of the opinion that the re-run election would be of great interest to bookmakers, promised to be an epic battle between the two.
What is more interesting is that the name of Hon. (Alhaji) Lawal Idirisu has dominated the political landscape in Ajaokuta Local Government Area.
Like a shooting star, he has continued to be mentioned by political pundits in the area. Politics, most especially those ones whose political nuts were cracked for them by what Chinua Achebe in his book, Things Fall Apart, described as their benevolent “chi” like delude themselves as enviable and indispensable and their fortress as impregnable.
This quote implies to the recent call by a political party and its leadership in the area calling for ethnic divide in the next re-run election as against the mutual political understanding between the good people of Ajaokuta Local Government Area, irrespective of religion, ethnic and location.
It is for this reason that politicians are advised to always think in terms of their place in history. It is not for nothing! History is often in the future.
But it is written by the events of today. Therefore, much as Hon. Lawal has been tested, trusted, the people of Ajaokuta will continue to appreciate his commitment to their course, they will equally desirous to pay back in the forthcoming re-run election, in order to give them a touch of the good stuff he is made of in the National Assembly.
The people of Ajaokuta have spoken and will speak loud come November re-run election. For long, Ajaokuta Local Government and its resident has been held by the jugular of a group of never-do-well and political tin-gods. The area has been in ruins, it has been unable to rise above mediocrity, and the local government has been in comatose. Fortunately enough, the political landscape in the area has apparently changed itself since Honourable Lawal’s leadership intervention.
As an engine room for political organization, Hon. Lawal’s noble contributions to the ruling party, APC, at state and in Ajaokuta Local Government level, have shown very brightly and have caught the attention of several agents of democratization. Despite all intimidation by all political power brokers in the area, his natural strength did not give way and all political contradiction did not make him loose focus. His political vision shone by the day as he continues to be a role model to many.
To cap it all, the political enigma of this young man continue. to dazzle all through credible political leadership and representation. There is no doubt that his re-election will usher in more dividend of democracy to his people.
However, from whichever side of coin one looks at Honourable Lawal Idirisu, he remains a gallant victor at all season.
