The Light Up Lokoja Group, a conglomerate comprising youths across Lokoja, the capital of Kogi State, are set for peaceful demonstration over lack of power supply in the city.
In a strongly-worded letter to the Governor of Kogi State, a copy of which was made available to our reporter in Lokoja, leader of the group and convener, Comrade Suleiman Isyaka, gave management of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) seven days ultimatum to ensure regular power supply.
According to the letter in which the speaker of the state House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Umar Ahmed Imam, the Business Manager, AEDC, Lokoja Business Office, Lokoja Local Government administrator, Hon Lawal Shiru and all security agencies were copied to, the body gave the electricity company a seven days ultimatum in which it expects an improved power supply.
The letter reads, in part; “we, the members of the above named organization concerned about the paucity of electricity in our beloved Lokoja, write to inform you of our dissatisfaction with the situation as it has hampered economic and social activities in the city.”
“In view of the above, we therefore demand an improved power supply in the upward of between at least eighteen and twenty hours per day within the next seven days.”
It went further to inform the authorities concerned that if within the stipulated days they do not see improvement, they would embark on a demonstration that disrupt socioeconomic activities in the state.
The group has, since few days now, launched a social media campaign with a hash tag #AEDCLightUpLokoja to put a searchlight on the matter with the aim of addressing the harrowing hardship being endured by residents and people of Lokoja over the nonavailability of electricity for the purpose of improved micro and macro economic activities.
