“At the end of life we will not be judged by how many diplomas we have received, how much money we have made, how many great things we have done. We will be judged by ‘I was hungry and you gave me to eat, I was naked and you clothed me, I was homeless and you took me in.’ Hungry not only for bread — but hungry for love. Naked not only for clothing — but naked for human dignity and respect. Homeless not only for want of a room of bricks — but homeless because of rejection.” ~ Mother Teresa*
Man cannot live in isolation. So society plays a very important role in nurturing our lives. So it is our duty that when we become capable enough to earn our living we should give back to society a certain percentage of our wealth for the welfare of the lesser privileged.
God has given us the talent and gift and it is our duty to give back to God by serving mankind. This is not charity, this is our social responsibility, our duty.
It is important to give back what we earn for the greater good of society. It’s our individual and collective responsibility of giving back to the society that deposited so much in us.
You don’t have to possess a lot of money to make charitable donations and contributions, making an effort to touch someone’s life positively are a huge contribution.
At times, in giving back to the society in the biggest way, the smallest acts are the kindest and richest.
Just like Malcom Bane wrote, “if you wait until you can do everything for everybody, instead of something for somebody, you will end up not doing nothing for nobody”.
Only recently, Alhaji Abubakar Ohere who I adorably call ‘Adayi’ has clearly showed his love for giving to the society.
His act of giving according to his contemporaries, dates back from his youthful age. He has been one among equals who feels for people and loved to give than to receive.
The recent shower of love to some Kogi state students in form of scholarship, informed my quest to put pen to paper.
His recent contribution towards educational support shouldn’t be left untold. By way of giving scholarship to undergraduate and post graduate students across all boards is commendable and worthy of emulation.
His gestures are countless. Damn too numerous to mention.
It’s not that Hon. Abubakar Ohere is the wealthiest being around this space on planet earth. No!
His unique trait of generosity makes him stand out. Without mincing words, I make bold to say Adayi is God’s sent.
I won’t end this piece without calling on others who God has given the capacity to give back to the society, to see giving as a duty and not charity.
I’m sure I’m not the only witness of his generous spirit who has a story to tell. But I owe it a duty to bear witness to the great attributes of this quintessential gentleman – mentor, teacher, leader, friend to many, high and low.
