As the sun sets on Professor Salisu Ogbo Usman’s first tenure as the Rector of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, it’s impossible not to feel a swell of pride and gratitude for the transformation that has taken place under his watchful leadership. His journey, marked by a commitment to excellence and a dedication to transparency and integrity, stands as a beacon of hope in a time when the educational landscape desperately requires visionary guidance.

Professor Usman’s leadership is prophetic; it rallies the spirit of meritocracy amidst a milieu often fraught with primordial sentiments. Referencing to the recent kogi politics (electioneering process) deeply-rooted in regional sentiments and biases, Prof Ogbo has shown a refreshing ability to transcend these sentiments and elevate the standards of governance and leadership within the institution. By prioritizing merit and fostering an environment where skills and contributions are valued above all else, he has reshaped not only the polytechnic but has also set a powerful example for governmental and institutional leaders within Kogi State.

Is it not rare to encounter a politician of his caliber who resists the temptation to entangle academia in the webs of partisan politics? Professor Usman, while a dedicated party member, has displayed strong resolve to keep the administration of the polytechnic insulated from the fractious nature of politics. He has proven to be an administrator in the truest sense, a person who prioritizes the collective welfare of his institution over personal or party advantages. His ability to remain steadfast in this regard has fortified the polytechnic’s foundation and nurtured an environment in which everyone feels valued and heard and things are done according to laid down ethics and standards.

One of the most striking accomplishments of Professor Ogbo’s tenure has been the significant approaches to infrastructure.

Picture the campus transforming, with state-of-the-art facilities rising in place of dilapidated structures. The genesis of this transformation was not merely about bricks and mortar but about cultivating a fertile ground for learning and personal development. The atmosphere of growth extends beyond physical advancements and permeates through the strategic emphasis on Information Technology and Entrepreneurship Development. These initiatives have armed students with the tools needed to venture confidently into the rapidly changing world in the direction of ICT, accolades to Professor Ogbo’s forward-thinking approach.

Most importantly, his institutionalization of research awards has sparked a culture of innovation. Acknowledging the incredible efforts of staff not only nurtures a sense of community but also fosters an environment where academic excellence thrives. By actively recruiting qualified professionals who resonate with his vision, he has cultivated a rich ecosystem of knowledge and expertise that propels the polytechnic forward, choosing to embrace a broader perspective that values contributions based solely on merit.

Professor Ogbo has adeptly positioned Kogi State Polytechnic not merely as an academic institution, but as an integral partner in the socio-economic development of the state. His initiatives, including the successful automation of the payment process, exemplify this forward-looking mindset. By effectively eliminating financial leakages that once plagued the institution, he has restored transparency and optimized resource allocation. This newfound clarity and efficiency have strengthened trust among staff, students, and stakeholders, creating a supportive and inclusive atmosphere conducive to growth and achievement.

Approachable yet firm, Professor Ogbo has fostered an open door policy that encourages students to voice their concerns. His presence is not one of distant authority but rather relatable leadership that champions student welfare. He has taken vigilant measures to protect students from exploitation, ensuring they can fully immerse themselves in their academic pursuits without the burdens of fear or uncertainty.

A pivotal milestone during Prof Ogbo leadership has been the tireless efforts to protect the institution by ensuring adequate security and surveillance and this is fortifying the polytechnic against potential threats of various kinds.

Professor Ogbo has ensured its sustainability for generations to come. His commitment to high academic standards has also been evident in the successful accreditation of new programmes and rigorous resource inspections, which have expanded the academic offerings of the institution.

As we celebrate the achievements of our amiable Professor, let us not overlook the profound impact of his renovations most notably the revitalized eight year abandoned hostel and the rejuvenation of the JAMB CBT Centre, construction of new and well equipped hospital, construction of standard security house, rehabilitation of the polytechnic internal roads, digging of boholes and other monumental edifice infrastructurs in the campuss. These improvements have greatly enhanced student life, offering a more conducive environment for academic growth.

In a world where cynicism often prevails, Professor Ogbo’s journey as a leader of the polytechnic is shining and it best depicts “One embraces service above self”. He has exemplifies a type of leadership that is not only about fulfilling required roles but about creating legacies that are felt within communities and institutions for generations and this will also innitiated healthy competition in the future

As he embarks on the next phase of his tenure, we express our heartfelt gratitude for his quality leadership.
