Kogi NGOs Network (KONGONET), the apex civil society coalition in the state, has appealed to all stakeholders involved in Saturday, October 19 local government elections in the state to play by the rules of the game.

In a statement signed by its Chairperson, Amb. Idris Ozovehe Muraina, KONGONET commended the Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission (KOSIEC) for their ongoing efforts in preparing for the elections.

The statement, however, urged KOSIEC to remain steadfast in upholding the principles of free, fair, and credible elections.

“Your role is pivotal, and we trust that you will execute your responsibilities with the utmost integrity and transparency,” the statement read.

KONGONET, an accredited observer of the local government elections, tasked security agencies to prioritize the safety and security of all participants, including voters, election officials, and observers.

The coalition noted that it is essential that security agencies maintain a neutral stance, providing a secure environment that fosters confidence in the electoral process.

“Your vigilance will help ensure that every citizen can exercise their right to vote without fear or intimidation,” KONGONET added.

It urged media organizations and journalists to report accurately and fairly, as the watchdogs of democracy, ensuring that the electorate is well-informed and that any malpractice is promptly highlighted.

“To the accredited observers, your presence is crucial in monitoring the electoral process. We trust that you will conduct your duties diligently, providing unbiased oversight that reinforces the democratic principles we all cherish. Your findings will be invaluable in assessing the legitimacy of the electoral outcomes.

“We extend our gratitude to the Kogi State government for its support to KOSIEC and other stakeholders in preparing for these elections. We encourage the government to continue providing the necessary resources and backing to ensure that this electoral process reaches a successful conclusion.

“We must also reflect on past experiences where adhoc staff expressed grievances regarding non-reimbursement for their efforts during elections. It is imperative that such issues do not arise again. We call on KOSIEC and the relevant authorities to put in place measures that guarantee timely and fair compensation for all those who work tirelessly to ensure the elections run smoothly.

“Moreover, we urge the electorates of Kogi State to actively participate in the electoral process. Exercise your rights to vote and choose leaders who represent your interests and aspirations. It is your civic duty to make your voice heard and contribute to the democratic governance of our dear state.”

KONGONET urged all citizens and stakeholders to commit to a peaceful electoral process across the 21 local government areas and 239 wards of Kogi State, adding that the success of the elections hinged on collective efforts to promote a peaceful atmosphere, free from violence and disruption.
