Ahead of Kogi state governorship election, the Kogi NGOs Network (KONGONET) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to to ensure transparency, fairness, and efficiency throughout the electoral process.
The call was contained in KONGONET’s position paper on the forthcoming governorship election which was signed by the chairperson of the group, Ambassador Idris Ozovehe Muraina and Secretary, Mr Reuben Joshua.
Joshua urged INEC to conduct free, fair, credible and verifiable election, with adequate security measures in place.
KONGONET called on political actors to engage in issue-based campaign that focus on ideas, policies and solution that will move the state forward.
“In these challenging times, as we strive for progress and unity, it is crucial that we embrace the principles of peaceful coexistence and prioritize the greater good of our state above all else.
“Elections are the cornerstone of any democracy, offering us the opportunity to exercise our democratic rights and shape the course of our collective future. They are a testament to the power of our voices and the strength of our unity. However, history has shown us that elections can also become a source of division and conflict. It is our responsibility, as responsible citizens and members of the apex civil society coalition in the state, to ensure that our political processes remain grounded in peace, fairness, and respect.
“Kogi State is known for its diversity, encompassing people from various ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds. Our diversity is our strength, representing a wealth of perspectives, traditions, and experiences that, when harnessed together, can propel our beloved state to new heights. As we approach the gubernatorial election, it is imperative that we celebrate and embrace this diversity, fostering an environment of inclusivity and understanding.
“Peaceful elections require the commitment and participation of every stakeholder in our state. Political parties, candidates, the electoral management body, security agencies, civil society organizations, and, most importantly, the citizens themselves all have a vital role to play in ensuring the success of our democratic process. It is incumbent upon us all to conduct ourselves with dignity, respect, and adherence to the rule of law.
“Furthermore, we want to emphasize the importance of a state-wide political agenda. Regardless of our political affiliations, we must recognize that our shared goal is the development and prosperity of Kogi State. It is time for us to set aside our differences and work together to address the pressing issues that affect our citizens, such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, and job creation. We must prioritize the needs of our people over partisan politics, striving to build a state that is inclusive, equitable, and sustainable.
“To achieve this, we call upon all political actors to engage in issue-based campaigns that focus on ideas, policies, and solutions. Let us move away from divisive rhetoric and personal attacks, and instead, engage in constructive dialogue that will enable us to make informed choices. It is through such discourse that we can identify common ground and work towards a shared vision for the future of our state,” the position paper read.
KONGONET implored every citizen of Kogi State to embrace the spirit of peaceful coexistence.
“Let us reject violence, hate speech, and any form of intimidation or coercion. Instead, let us come together as brothers and sisters, respecting our differences, and recognizing that our collective well-being depends on our ability to find common ground.”

He noted that KONGONET has always been a powerhouse of collective action, uniting NGOs from various sectors under a common vision of progress and inclusivity.
