A Lokoja, Kogi state based activist, Comrade Idris Miliki has called on labour unions in the state to return to the negotiation table with the state government on the new minimum wage for workers.

In a press release issued on Friday, Miliki asserted that civil servants are the “creators of the wealth politicians fritter away with reckless abandon”.

He called on labour leaders to end the “modern day slavery” civil servants in the state are subjected to.

“Minimum wage is a constitutional and legal matter. It is Act of the National Assembly, that is subject for a review every five years. It is, however, unfortunate, worrisome and comfortable that 18 months after President Muhammudu Buhari signed the minimum wage into law, Kogi state government is yet to conclude negotiations, talk more of the commencement of payment.

“If the federal government, and even some states, have since commenced payment, what is the rational for the non-completion of negotiations and commencement of payment of the minimum wage in Kogi state?

“Kogi state workers can not and must not be made scapegoats, as they are the creators of the wealth that politicians fritter away with reckless abandon.

“We call on the organised labour to go back to the negotiations table immediately and stop this modern slavery that the workers in Kogi state are being subjected to,” he said.
