Kogi State House of Assembly on Tuesday screened seven out of eight nominees appointed as members of the Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC) by the state governor, Alhaji Yahya Bello.
One of nominees, Alh Ali Lawal Jiya was disqualified for failure to present himself for screening after submitting his curriculum vitae.
Barr. Cosmas Atabor of Igalamela/Odolu Constituency moved a motion that his nomination be discountenanced and disqualified, and not attended to for same nomination again. Atabor’s motion was seconded by Hon. Moses Ododo Edoko of Dekina/Biraidu Constituency and supported by Hon. Enema Paul.
The screening took place in the chamber of the State House of Assembly which was presided by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Matthew Kolawole.
The newly constituted SIEC members has Mamman Nda Eri as the Chairman of the Commission.
Other members are Abdulkarim Jamiu, Alhaji Musa Adama Babakeke, Hon. Funsho Olorunfemi, and Chogudo Yakubu Musa and Hon. Labaran Yahaya Oyigebe while Ozovehe John Enesi is the Secretary of the Commission.
The seven-man nominees of the State Independent Electoral Commission after the confirmation by the Assembly are expected to conduct the local government election.
The first list submitted to the House was earlier turned down by the state lawmakers after discovering that the members who are supposed to be nonpartisan are all card carrying APC members.
The earlier list sent to the state Assembly for confirmation by the governor had the former Lokoja Administrator, Shiru Lawal, a known APC member, as the chairman of the eight man State Independent Electoral Commission.
The governor is expected to swear them in this week at Lugard House Lokoja.
