Ijumu Students Union was established in the year 1963 by sons and daughters of Ijumu in various higher institutions of learning in Nigeria with the aim of bringing students from Ijumu Kingdom together under one big umbrella.

The said union is an avenue for students from Ijumu to share knowledge, ideas and build leadership skills. It is a known fact that the union made some of us and must be sustained.

The hijack of the said union by Hon. Taofik A. Isah, the Administrator of Ijumu Local Government Council is worrisome. At Ijumu Students Union National Conference held in Odokoro Gbede in the year 2016, the man in question denied Ijumu students the opportunity to choose their leaders as he militarised the whole process.

I learnt that he did the same thing during the just concluded abortive Ijumu Students Union Conference in Ikoyi. A friend told me that students were harassed, intimidated, tortured and even locked-up in a classroom in order to achieve his devilish act. This is unacceptable and must be condemned by all and sundry.

As a stakeholder, I want to use this medium to tell him that he lack the power to suspend the activities of the union because he is not an elected council chairman hence he cannot exercise such power. The suspension was a huge joke. It can only be effective when there is crisis rocking the union and not otherwise.

I want to plead with our students to remain resolute and law abiding with the hope that this ungodly act will come to an end sooner than expected. It’s a matter of time. I think our students should by now understand his game plan. To him, he is trying to put strategy in place for the next election.

I can assure our students that this will be the last time something like that will happen to the union. Mark my word. We will unite against the oppressor(s) henceforth.

Finally, I equally want to use this opportunity to call on the Olujumu of Ijumu Kingdom, Oba Williams Olusegun Ayeni for quick intervention. He should call the Administrator to order.
