ActionAid Nigeria and Participation Initiative for Behavioral Change in Development (PIBCID) has trained Area Education Evaluators (AEEs) in Kogi, to strengthen monitoring capacity of the inspectorates and quality assurance unit.
Mrs Gift Omoniwa, the Executive Director of PIBCID, told newsmen on Tuesday in Lokoja, that the two-day workshop was organised in collaboration with the Kogi Government.
“The training is part of our commitment toward implementing the action plans of “Kogi Education Summit” held on Jan. 22.
“Basically, we want to improve the capacity of the Area Evaluators and the Quality Assurance Department of Kogi Ministry of Education, to monitor schools and the indicators required for effective evaluation and quality assessment.
“The training will also serve as instrument as one of the outcomes that will be utilized in monitoring schools for resumption of third term session,” Omoniwa said.
The state’s Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mrs Rosemary Osikoya, thanked the organisations for being supportive and commended Gov. Yahaya Bello, for making education a topmost priority.
Osikoya urged the participants to have a change of attitude, always develop a work plan and improve on their work, stressing that individuals has a personal responsibility to develop his or herself.
She urged them to ensure they improve their skills, upgrade themselves and effectively apply the acquired knowledge on the job, stressing the need for teachers to add professional value to themselves.
According to her, there is need for teachers and evaluators to be skilled, innovative and competent, wondering why some area evaluators could not recite the second stanza of the National Anthem.
She said that the ministry was not unaware of some education challenges, but urged the stakeholders to effectively play their roles while the state government would try as much as possible to do its own part.
One of the participants, Abu Abdulkadir, said that they were greatly impressed with the training, that their knowledge on evaluation had improved comprehensively, but urged the ministry to provide vehicles for zonal offices for effective performance.
Another participants, Pastor Godwin Abraham, commended the organisers for the initiative, saying “the workshop is an eye-opener as they have learnt that evaluation is the core value of the education sector.’’
Abraham urged the ministry to make provision for adequate staff and facilities in the evaluators offices across the state.
