I woke up this morning to an atrocious declaration of interest on the vacancy created by the demise of RT. Hon. Umar Buba Jibril, the Deputy Majority Leader representing Lokoja/Koto Federal Constituency in the Federal House of Representatives whose death was announced barely two weeks ago.
The lawmaker who was loved by virtually all sons and daughters of Lokoja/Koto federal Constituency was a third timer in the green chamber. This political feat can easily be used to describe the love of his people towards him. All these political feats came with its own adversaries who hated his guts, affront and bluntness. Even amongst his party members and compatriots. They hated him, envied him and wished they had his political clout and followership. Above all, they wanted his seat. Late Umar Buba Jibril had cult like followers who are always there when he calls. These followers overwhelmingly cuts across the two local government areas that makes up the federal Constituency he represented and beyond. He was an enigma.
Few weeks before his death, Hon. Umar Buba Jibril’s supporters and followers began canvassing for his reelection, in what was termed “Season Four”. A move I was critical about and didn’t mince words in kicking against, outrightly. This I did for the sake of fairness, goodwill and morality to our brothers the Kogi/Koton Karfe people.
In less than two weeks, exactly on the 29th March, 2018 was when the inevitable happened. He was buried the next day on Friday 30th March, 2018. The eyes of the entire Nigeria was at Lokoja for his burial, including his former colleague the former Speaker of the House of Representatives and currently the Executive Governor of Sokoto state, Alh. Waziri Tambuwal attended his burial at Kabawa Islamic cemetery, Lokoja. Just few days back, his Fidau Prayer was offered and had many dignitaries allover Nigeria in attendance.
The dysphoria of the demise of Hon. Umar Buba Jibril was still fresh in our hearts when Facebook and WhatsApp messages urging constituents to support one known political son, now rival of the late sage started flying everywhere. I was shocked at the callousness, desperation and disregard for the dead. In less than two weeks, a politician have declared interest for the seat of Rt. Hon. Buba Jibril. This move is capable of opening Hon. Buba Jibril’s death to questions. I doubt if INEC has been officially communicated on the death of the member representing the good people of Lokoja/Koton Karfe Constituency which is the first step to constitutionally commence preparation for a by-election to have him replaced.
This height of greed and desperation is alien to us as a people and shouldn’t be encouraged at all. Whoever will succeed RT. Hon. Buba Jibril must not only have respect for him even in his death, he/she must value the sanctity of human life, respect the feelings and emotions of Lokoja/Koton Karfe constituents and the seat of member representing a Constituency in the Federal House of Representatives.
