The Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC) says it is partnering with Kogi Government in its bid to ensuring safety of school children on Nigeria roads.
The Sector Commandant of FRSC in Kogi, Mr Olusegun Martins, disclosed this at a meeting with the state’s Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mrs Rosemary Osikoya, in Lokoja.
Martins said the aim of the meeting was to collaborate with the ministry on how to ensure safety of lives and property on the road especially the school children.
“We are talking of inculcating into young ones the safety mentality to catch them young and education ministry is the owner of young ones in basic schools.
“A good government will prioritise the lives of its children, improve their wellbeing and at sametime enjoy stakeholders cooperation in a symbiotic collaboration with the federal establishments”, Martins said.
In her remarks, the Commissioner expressed excitement that the stakeholders were responding to the call she has been making in the past few months that ‘education is everybody’s business.
“I feel excited that the call for partnership we are agitating in private sector is yielding results; we are seeing the results already.
“Without good education you cannot have a viable society or any development in science and technology.
“We are excited that FRSC has come to us to partner with us because we are really concerned about what happens when you left children out of schools.
“How many schools by the roadside have the necessary safety highway signs that warn motorists when approaching a school about 1km or 2km away to prepare their mind.
“But most of this roads infrastructure are not there, and the risk of accident is always present. We want to inculcate into every young mind the things that they need to do.
“FRSC is coming on board and we have also met with the Commandant of NDLEA, everything is taking shape.
“So, the opportunity the FRSC is bringing on the table and drawing our attention to those things we need to know and opportunity to utilize,” Osikoya said.
Also speaking, Mr Moses Abara, the Special Adviser to Governor on Education, Science and Technology. said partnering with FRSC was crucial due to the importance attached to safety of lives especially the school children.
“I think the motorists need more of education than enforcement, the level of reckless driving in Kogi is very high; the FRSC should do more on educating the drivers
“Motorists need to be more careful because life has no duplicate,” Abara said.
