In a generation where slay queens are a dime in a dozen, Jamilat Abdulkadir is a breath of fresh air. In this interview with Eunice Emmanuel-Bagi, the 15 year old author talks about her love for writing.
Tell me a bit about you?
My name is Jemilat Abdulkadir, I from Idah Local Government in Kogi State and I am 15 years old. I am an SS1 student of Abundant Life College, Lokoja but before then I attended Baptist High School in Lokoja.
What inspired to write a book?
It all started in Primary School, Primary 5 to be precise. My Teacher came to the class to teach us on the topic “Story Writing” and he gave examples of people who had written stories like Wale Shoyinka, Chinua Achebe among others.
He also said something that day   and what he said changed my perception of life forever; he said that anyone can write a story. This was how I got interested in story writing.
There are a lot of teenagers and youths who will be reading this interview, what will you like to tell them about writing?
I will like to tell them that when our teachers teach in class, we shouldn’t take what they teach us for granted. There is a lot to be gained from all the topics, subjects and modules that are taught in our classes. They should always pay attention to the subjects they are taught in school, there is a purpose for everyone it may not even be in writing, but you can discover yourself and your interests through the things that you are taught in school.
Your book is called “Diana my pride” can you tell me a bit about it?
I discovered that there are two key problems that we do not talk about enough in this part of the world. They are generational problems and sexual bondage. The plot of the book “Diana my Pride” is centered on the key plot of generational problems. I intend to write another book with a plot that is centered on sexual bondage.
Tell me a bit about the characters in your book?
The story is centered on Diana; she is a destined child with the powers to save her people who held down by a curse made her forefather due to his quest for power. I won’t let the cat out of the bag any further than this, if you want to know what happens to Diana and her people you can get a copy of the book. It is being sold for N500 only.
Which writers inspire you?
I love Ben Carson; he is also my role model. I dream of somebody becoming a Medical Doctor like him. He has written a lot of books, he is successful Neurosurgeon and he has impacted a lot of lives positively, these are the reasons why he is my role model. I hope that someday I can achieve the feats that he has and do more than he has done.  My favorite book written by him is “Gifted Hands”.
In the next few years what do you see yourself doing?
I expect to write more books, I want to write inspirational books. I have a lot of favorite Authors in the inspirational book genre like Tim Lahaye, Ben Carson and others. I also love to read Wole Shoyinka‘s works.
I can see you that you are quite the voracious reader, how many books have you read this year?
Averagely I would say that I have read 30 books this year.
Baba Ojonugwa (JFO) discovered you, how did you meet him?
I would like to express my deepest appreciation to Mr. Baba Ojonugwa, if not for his support no one would have known about me or my book.
During the GYB got Talent Audition, I met with Mr. Frank Rajah and I told him about my book. He promised to help me get publicity but I guess he had a lot on his plate so he forgot. The next day I came back to the venue and I met JFO, he immediately became interested in my work and I will always be grateful to God for letting our parts cross in the way that it did.
