As the water level of River Niger rises, Executive Secretary of the Kogi State Emergency Management Agency (KOSEMA), Alice Ogedengbe, has said that the agency is prepared to tackle flood if it occurs.
Ogendegbe, while speaking with journalists at the weekend, said the agency is monitoring the water level on a daily basis in order not to be caught unawares.
She said the agency with the help of the flood committee which is under the chairmanship of the deputy governor, Yomi Awoniyi, has carried out sensitisation campaigns in nine local government areas affected by flood in 2012.
She said the flood management committee recently visited some areas prone to flood to assess the situation. She added that there is no cause for alarm as they are in contact with the National Inland Waterways Authority and management of dams across the country.
Ogedengbe said the agency will not relent in its efforts to sensitise members of the public on the need to keep water channels free of refuse. She also appealed to the managements of dams in Cameroon not release water at once, but on a gradual basis.
