Kogi United overcame a tensed atmosphere at the Confluence Stadium on Saturday to edge past Wikki Tourists 2-1 and soar to fourth on the Nigeria National League Pool A Log.
With some of the best talents of the Division like Shammah Tanze, Uche Martins, Aminu Abdulkadir, Ebenezer Odeyemi and Osas Eghe on parade the game was one the fans had not expected to miss.
When the action did start United exerted complete control of the opening minutes and got rewarded when talisman Ebenezer Odeyemi turned in a free kick from his skipper Afolabi Abiodun.
United’s flow was disrupted by a rare error from goalkeeper Shola Sheshere who failed to deal with a set piece, thus gifting the lurking Shammah Tanze the chance to grab the equaliser for the leaders in the 23rd minute.
The hosts had stabilised after the setback and continued to pressurise the visitors and they went ahead with seven minutes left to play in the first half.
Attacking midfielder Osas Eghe showed confidence on the ball and sent an unstoppable rocket to the post, which had goalkeeper Babangida Yusuf well beaten and the Lokoja fans appreciated the well crafted effort from him.
Moments later, Afolabi Abiodun had his effort struck the woodwork as the first stanza ended 2-1 in favour of the Abdullahi Biffo tutored team.
In the second half, United enjoyed spells of complete domination in territory and possession but failed to increase their advantage on the home stretch.
